What to Expect at Substance Abuse Treatment Centers

Several types of substance abuse treatment centers are available to addicts, based on the nature and magnitude of the addiction.  Whatever the case, detoxification is the first phase of breaking the stranglehold of harmful substances.  However, by itself, detoxification has very little effect on long-term substance abuse.

Substance abuse detoxification incorporates clustered interventions used to control the symptoms of withdrawal and intensified drug intoxication.  Ridding the body of the dangerous drugs is a huge component of drug detoxification.  The main objective of the detoxification procedure is to relieve the physical impact of abusing substances.

For the most part,  there are three approaches in substance abuse detoxification; these are:

1. Evaluation

In this first step of the detoxification operation, tests are carried out on individuals to identify the specific substances that are present in the bloodstream and the amount in their system.  In addition, substance abuse treatment centers appraise the addicted individual to ascertain if co-occurring disorders are present as well as problems associated with the mental capacity or behavior of the addict.

2. Stabilization

In this stage of the process, patients receive guidance and stabilization. People can do it alone or with the use of medication; however medication use is typically a part of the process.  Among the elements of the process of stabilization is explaining what the patient should expect while in treatment and recovery.

3. Guidance Throughout Treatment

This is the final stage of the process. As well as it prepares patients for the long haul of recovery.  It also gets the patients to consent to finishing the entire treatment process by enrolling in drug rehab.
