When Medications are a Treatment Starting Point

When medications and therapy are used in tandem, mental health, addiction and behavior disorders can be greatly alleviated. Recent studies show that less than half of children diagnosed with ADHD are given the combination. Rather, they are prescribed medication first and often do not receive therapy. The benefits of psychotherapy vary from alleviating symptoms to reducing the overall medical costs. The number of people using medications has increased in recent years while those using psychotherapy has decreased, despite widely cited evidence of its benefits.

Psychotherapists have a hard time competing with pharmaceutical companies when it comes to marketing expenditure and therefore struggle to get the exposure necessary to highlight the relative benefits of psychotherapy.
